Judith’s star has risen in the theater world to where she directs the state-sponsored company, Roughrider Stage, in Bismarck. She’s hoping to mount a production of Shakespeare's play, Pericles, Prince of Tyre, and is keen to set it among Native tribes along the Missouri River in a time before the arrival of Europeans—if only she can put together funding. The play is very personal to her, as her husband’s early life parallels Shakespeare’s hero in powerful ways.
Myron is the state’s agriculture commissioner, and is about to upend their lives when he’s recruited to run for a U.S. Senate seat. Myron's past will come to more than just haunt their present, and soon their life begins to resemble the tale of Pericles more than either of them ever imagined.
Will the story of Pericles on the stage be the only one to achieve a happy end?
Myron has a cousin-once-removed, Eddie, who has been in a nursing home ever since he was left quadriplegic and mute from a car accident when he was 19. Myron stops in to see Eddie sometimes, but not as often as he'd like. After Eddie's folks passed a couple of years back, Myron became his guardian. This early autumn, a male visitor unfamiliar to Myron has been showing up to spend time with Eddie, from what he is told by the nurses. But is he, really, unfamiliar? A new season is about to start in Eddie's seemingly constrained existence.
